Family's Story

Alla (73), an electromechanic, and Mykola (77), a mechanic, lived in Druzhkivka when the war began. As shells fell, they fled first to Kyiv and later to Truskavets, searching desperately for safety. Renting proved nearly impossible, with landlords raising prices every month. With their pensions stretched to breaking, they eventually sought shelter at Batkivshchyna.

For a time, the sanatorium gave them rest. But now that program is ending, and like so many others, they are being forced to leave. Returning to Donbas is not an option. The region is battered daily by rockets, drones, and bombardments. For the Sapozhkovs, the fear is not only of war, but of homelessness — the gnawing question of where they will go when one more door closes on them.

They worked all their lives to build stability, only to spend their later years chasing it. Their story is a stark reminder that war’s cost is not only measured in battles, but in the everyday struggles of families like theirs.
