The Kokosha Family

stay on their land while they rebuild their lives

Their Family Story

The Kokosha Family—mother Alla, father Anatoly, and their 2 sons Denis (16 years old) and Artem (13 years old)—had a beautiful house in the village of Buzova set on a huge piece of land. Alla’s mother and brother also lived with them.

Buzova was directly in the path the Russians took while attempting to attack Kyiv. They shot caravans of cars containing people trying to escape, burned the corpses of people, and demolished everything in their path with tanks.  In order to escape, the family drove under shelling through a field instead of on a road.  They still can’t believe that they managed to escape.

Alla’s mother and brother did not want to leave their home and they stayed behind in the cellar until the moment when a bomb flew into the cellar and everything caught fire. All of Alla’s mother’s hair was burned off  and her brother had a heart attack. They miraculously survived and neighbors drove them to the hospital under gunfire.

The Kokosha family asked for help from the authorities, oligarchs and deputies with no results. Various charities came, photographed the devastation, promised to help and did not return. Their neighbors have allowed Alla’s mother and brother to stay in a room at their house.

Realizing that there would be no help, the family decided to rebuild one room on their own. Anatoly is almost finished and will add a potbelly stove.  This room will save them from dying in the cold but it won’t give them a place to cook and wash. It is difficult to convey the conditions in which this family lives.

The Kokosha family came to terms with their grief.  Instead of begging for help, the family asked us to help those in more need. But we have seen few families in a situation like this one.  Alla and Anatoly said that they would do everything possible so that the children had a roof over their heads. It will take them a long time to recover, but they hope to have a kitchen, a bathroom and at least a couple more bedrooms for their family to live in safely.

For $23,000, we have built a home for the Kokosha family.
