Mariia Bohorod 15, female from Chernihiv
Profile
My name is Mariia, I am 15 years old from Chernihiv, Ukraine — one of the first cities hit when the full-scale invasion began. I live with my parents and younger sister Dasha, who inspires me daily with her kindness and strength. We also have a small dog, Candy, who brings comfort during difficult times.
Before the war, I was an active student involved in capoeira, rhythmic gymnastics, and chess, where I became a multiple-time champion in my city and region. I’ve won several school Olympiads in mathematics and English and love learning and pushing myself. I also volunteer, helping environmental projects and supporting Ukrainian defenders through fundraising and care packages.
The war changed everything: the sirens, cold basements, and constant fear. What hurts most is seeing my sister lose her carefree teenage years. War robs you of your sense of future and direction.
This program offers me more than just an education — it’s a chance to heal emotionally, discover new friendships, and be seen not only as a “girl from a war zone” but as a teenager with passions and dreams. I love writing poems and short stories, reading detective novels like Agatha Christie’s, and finding light in small moments with my family and friends.
Through this program, I hope to find safety, connection, and the joy of learning again, while bringing my experience, values, and hope to a new community.
