Their Family Story

Oleg Borisovich is 82 years old, and Nadezhda Ivanovna is 65. Oleg Borisovich has two higher educations: he is a gynecologist and a journalist. Irpin was under heavy shelling. Nadezhda Ivanovna could not stand the horror of the war and went to her relatives in another city. Oleg Borisovich remained to guard the house. There was no electricity or gas. The headquarters of the Red Cross was in the basement of the polyclinic, 10 minutes from the house of Oleg and Nadezhda. They were cooking and distributing food to those who could not leave Irpin. Oleg Borisovich, when the shelling subsided, ran there to eat. On March 23, Oleg went out of the house into the yard, managed to move 2 meters away from the house, and a rocket flew into the house. The house caught fire instantly. He recalls with horror the despair when he saw how a house burst into flames from an exploding rocket in a second. He watched it burn, could not do anything, could not even run into the house for documents – everything was broken and on fire. On the side of the house, the family has a small but deep basement. Left on the street in the city where the hardest fighting was going on, Oleg had nowhere to go, so he stayed in that basement. There, he spent all summer and autumn until frost. With the onset of frost, a distant relative of Oleg offered him a sofa in his apartment. The man’s wife left for Europe, and he lived alone and let Oleg in to live with him. Nadezhda returned from her relatives and now lives with her husband with this relative. They live together in one room. In the spring, the relative’s wife returns from Germany, so there will no longer be a place for Oleg and Nadezhda. They will return to their tiny basement. Oleg keeps his fortitude and clarity of mind. This is an amazing family of kind and unbroken people.
