Oleksii Skyba 16, male from Kharkiv

Profile

My name’s Alexey, I’m 16 years old, and I live in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region — a place that has faced a lot in recent years. I live with my mom, Nadejda, whose name means “hope,” and she’s been working as an accountant for nearly 30 years. It’s just the two of us, so I’m an only child.

My biggest passion is programming. I want to become a software developer, not just because it sounds cool, but because it feels right. I run Linux on my main machine, and I love customizing PC components. My mom gave me my first computer when I was 12, and at first I used it for gaming, but now it’s mostly for coding, automating tasks, and school. Later, she signed me up for a programming school, and that’s when everything clicked.

I also love swimming — before the war, I trained regularly and earned second junior division in the 60-meter freestyle (43.7 seconds). Taekwondo has been another big part of my life for seven years, teaching me discipline through early mornings, long days, and summer camps. I’ve won both the Ukrainian Championship and the Kharkiv Regional Championship. Without the war, I’d probably have my black belt by now, but I still hope to achieve it.

Other hobbies include cycling, volleyball, cooking, chess, and learning languages. Because I’m studying online, I have time to explore these interests. Lately, I’ve also been fascinated by cars and have been studying engine mechanics.

Why do I want to go to the USA?

First, I dream of building an educational platform to help beginners learn deep technical skills like setting up servers and understanding low-level code. When I started, I struggled with dense documentation, so I began writing clearer notes — that’s where the idea was born. I want this platform to be free and accessible to everyone.

Second, I need a break. I want to study without air alerts and explosions. I want to remember what it feels like to live without fear woven into daily life.

Going to the USA is not just a trip for me — it’s a chance to restart, grow, and dream beyond the war.

Thank you for reading my story. I hope I’ll have the chance to meet you, my future host family.
