Help Serhiy and Lyubov Tarasenko Find a permanent home at "Our People" Senior Center

Their Story

Lyubov (74) and Serhiy (75) built their lives in the quiet village of Novozlatopil, Zaporizhzhia region. Their days were once filled with tending their home, visiting with neighbors, and watching their children grow into adults. Life was simple but full of meaning. That peace shattered in March 2022, when the village was seized.

On the night of March 27, heavy fighting engulfed their street. For hours the sounds of gunfire and explosions filled the air, until finally their home crumbled under the assault. By dawn, there was nothing left but rubble. The occupying soldiers allowed the remaining residents to leave, and nearly the entire village fled at once, abandoning not just homes, but generations of memories.

Now, Lyubov and Serhiy live with the knowledge that they will never return to the place they called home. Their sons carry their own burdens — one disabled, the other serving in the military — leaving the elderly couple with no place of their own. In the autumn of their lives, when they should be surrounded by peace and stability, they instead face displacement and uncertainty, yearning for something as basic as a safe roof under which to spend their final years.
