Zabashta Family

Klavdiya Ivanivna Zabashta, 86 years old
Klavdiya’s daughter, Iryna Dolbnya, 61 years old, an accountant for the railway
Iryna’s husband, Oleksiy Dolbnya, 63 years old, worked on a collective farm before the war.

“On February 24, 2022, at 5 a.m., we felt the war firsthand. The sounds of explosions from the border, located 15 kilometers away, reached our village, accompanied by gunfire that forced us to hide in a cold basement with our elderly and sick mother. It was terrifying. In March, the occupiers damaged the electricity and gas pipelines, leaving us without basic utilities. We survived as best we could, struggling through each day.

In April, a missile hit near our yard, breaking windows and damaging the roof. That was when we decided to leave our home and move to Bohodukhiv, where our elderly aunt lived. She had only one room for all of us. My sister and her husband also came with us, and it was very cramped. On August 24, 2022, we received news from our village that our home and all our belongings had burned down.

In late November 2023, we returned to our village, where we had lived since 1973. Now, we all live in my sister’s apartment. We deeply long to return to our land and rebuild our life there.”
