The Marushchak Family

The Marushchak Family consists of Grandmother Liubov (81), Granddaughter Anna (32), and Great-grandson Matviy (6). On February 24th, a series of explosions echoed, awakening everyone. Liubov and Anna understood that war had begun. Taking little Matviy, they all moved to the cellar, where they lived in hiding for four exhausting months. Periodically, they ventured outside to prepare something to eat. While in the cellar, they heard Russian soldiers walking through the house, taking everything valuable and all the food. The Russians went through all the houses, taking bits of people’s past lives. The family couldn’t contact their relatives and everyone fell ill, as staying in the cellar most of the time took a toll on their health. Also, the lack of medication for Grandma set them on edge to leave. Anna left the little child in Grandma’s care and set out in search of help, looking for someone who could help them escape. Four days later, with the help of law enforcement and volunteers who showed extraordinary compassion and courage, the family managed to escape the Russian military occupation. Later, they received news from fellow villagers about the destruction of their house. This was a great tragedy for their family, especially for Liubov. Anna is the only one working in the family; they have great financial challenges and no means to build a home. But in their hearts burns the flame of hope – hope that they will return to their native village and rebuild their future again.
